Dr. Terrell-Powell is the founder of Diversity Matters (DM), a business committed to developing and fostering a climate of multicultural understanding, respect and appreciation. DM provides diversity training/facilitation, assessment and consultation to public and private organizations. Dr. Terrell-Powell earned her Bachelors of Arts degree in Social Science Education from Langston University, a predominantly Black College in Oklahoma. She taught several years in secondary education before returning to complete her master degrees in psychology and psychological counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. She completed her doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in multicultural counseling and supervision at The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Terrell-Powell has over 17 years of teaching experience in secondary and higher education. As an associate faculty at Shoreline Community College, she taught multicultural studies and worked with faculty on matters concerning curriculum transformation and pedagogy. She has made presentations at national conferences and has participated in providing diversity training, assessment, lectures, and motivational presentations. In 1999, she co-directed the Curriculum Transformation Summer Institute, Exploring Difference in Multicultural Classrooms, which was sponsored by Shoreline Community College and The University of Washington. In 1996, she co-authored an article entitled, Creating a Therapeutic Alliance: A Multicultural Perspective. |

Among her many honors and awards are the 2003 Humanities Washington Award, "which recognizes an individual or organization whose time and talents enlarge the meaning of the humanities in our lives and whose work reflects the spirit and programs of Humanities Washington;" the Public Library Association's 2001 Allie Beth Martin Award, which "recognizes a public librarian demonstrating a range and depth of knowledge about books and other library materials and the distinguished ability to share that knowledge;" the 2004 Louis Shores Greenwood Publishing Group Award for excellence in the reviewing of books and other materials for libraries; and the 2004 Media and Communications Award from the Ontario, Canada, Library Association. She also was named the Totem Business and Professional Women's "1998 Woman of Achievement " award and the 1997 Open Book Award from the Pacific Northwest Writers Conference. In 1998, Library Journal named her Fiction Reviewer of the Year. She is also the model for the Librarian Action Figure, available worldwide from Accoutrements, Inc.
