News from the Libraries

Centralia College by Philip Meany

Funds from the Student Technology Fee were given to the library to purchase a new Internet server. Our new Web page address is: http://library.centralia.ctc.edu. Another award allowed the library to purchase Britannica Online for a one-year trial period.

Bellevue by Kate Bradley

Personnel changes at Bellevue CC - Terry Clark retired in January. His position as reference librarian is being filled on a temporary basis by Beth Fraser, formerly at the UW. Francine Walls departed at the end of spring quarter. Her position is being filled on a temporary basis by two persons, Wilma Dougherty and Jeffrey Cinnamond. We're hoping the positions will not be lost, and that in the spring we will be recruiting two full-time tenure-track librarians who would begin in the fall of 1999.

The Library building is in the final stages of enlargement, and may be completed before the end of fall quarter. The additional space will give us an elevator to the second floor, more shelving for books (now if they'll just give us more MONEY for books!!!) and new group study rooms. It also means we will have restrooms on the second floor as well as on the first. ( At this point, having had no restrooms at all during the past year of remodeling, it is the new restrooms which will be the greatest, most immediate cause to cheer!!)

We are busy separating our holdings from those of Edmonds in the process of the amicable divorce between our two databases. When we migrate from Inlex to Voyager we'll each be on our own.

Shahla Rowhani and I are each teaching an information competency class this quarter. The class is much needed, but the fact that together we have fewer than 30 students enrolled and there are, this quarter, some 20,000 students (yep - that's not a typo!) coming to BCC, I think we need to devise a different way of integrating information literacy into the classes.

Edmonds Community College by Monica Tobin

First, on a personal note, I was married this summer on July 12, although my name will still be Tobin. My husband, Dick Davis, a longtime Art Department faculty member here at Edmonds CC, has just moved to an Art Department faculty position at Shoreline CC, where he'll be manager of and teaching in the multimedia program. He begins his new position fall quarter, 1998.

I'd also like to recommend a book to folks who are going to be involved in a new building and/or remodel project. It's entitled, How buildings learn: What happens after they're built. Stewart Brand. Viking, June 1994. ISBN: 0670835153. It was recommended to me by a librarian from the University of Washington, and it's a fascinating look at how buildings alter and change over time to fit new functions never anticipated when the architectural plans were first drawn. The book provides many photos and gives examples of a variety of buildings that were successfully (and unsuccessfully) renovated to meet changing needs. For anyone considering building remodels, it's a thoughtful read.

Also should mention we've just completed our remodel of the Edmonds CC library. We've moved back into our remodeled and expanded space and are just hearing the first responses from staff and students. From the library staff's point of view, we're thrilled with the results! We welcome anyone who'd like to come and take a look around to stop in for a visit. We won't be having our grand opening, however, until January due to some small items still needing to be completed.

Editor's Note: As part of the remodel, new lamps were added that are truly funtional works of art. Red Japanese maple leaves are embedded in the paper that forms the shades.

Grays Harbor College by Stan Horton

Grays Harbor College has two new librarians on staff this Fall:

Adrienne Julius is our new faculty librarian. She will supersede Don Cates, librarian for the last 30 years, who will retire at the end of Fall Quarter. Adrienne received her MLS from the UW in December, 1997, and has experience both at Seattle Central CC and UW Bothell. Her duties here will include reference, instruction, and "other duties as assigned."

Elaine Holster joins us as Assistant Director. She received her MLIS from the University of Texas, and brings significant experience in public libraries in both Texas and Oregon. Her duties at GHC include cataloging, automated systems, and (of course) those "other duties as assigned."

Highline by Jack Harton

As for Highline, we have a new faculty reference librarian (Karen Fernandez) and a new Head of Technical Services (Monica Luce).

Seattle Central by Karen Michaelsen

Seattle Central Community College also has a new librarian. Lynn Kanne comes to us from King County Libraries where she supported their Internet training program at one of the branches. She has also worked at Bellevue Community College and the University of Washington.

Kelley McHenry has accepted a position as the head librarian for the International School in Amsterdam. We wish her well and we miss her. We're even a little jealous!

Lake Washington Technical by Paula Palmer Paula Palmer is participating as a consultant with the development team that is creating an Anthropology 100 course for WAOL.

Skagit by Mindy Coslor

Yes, we have a change here at Skagit. Marjorie Havist retired as Dean at the end of June. Mindy Coslor is serving as Interim Dean and Margret Mills is full-time, temporary Librarian in Reference for this school year.

South Seattle by Randy Nelson

South Seattle Community College welcomes Pamela Wilkins as our 3rd full-time faculty librarian. This is a new position! Pamela, whose MLS is from the University of Michigan, comes to us from Seattle Public Library. Her portfolio will include distance learning support and web page development. She will be a definite asset as we move into our new facility next Fall (with its 100 station "Information Commons"). Those attending the conference in Centralia will have an opportunity to meet Pamela.
