News from the Libraries

Centralia

As our Macintonsh public workstations age, we have made the decision to switch to PCs running Windows '95. The staff will be learning the new operating system.

Stephanie Carter presented a workshop entitled, "Internet in the Classroom: Doing & Assessing" for faculty at the Centralia College East Campus. The presentation is available at http://centralia.ctc.edu/~scarter/Presentations/ECCt.html.

The CBC library has had some personnel changes this fall. Joan Davis, Library Technician II, moved to Denver and Geanene Lubinski, Program Coordinator, has taken a job on the Richland campus. This gave us an opportunity to re-evaluate our staffing needs. Since we have for all intents and purposes finished our recon project, we no longer need the technician position. What we do need is a Computer Support Technician and we are in the process of hiring one right now. Paula Ochoa has joined our staff as Senior Secretary.

During the summer we added EBSCOHost and Newsbank to our online databases. EBSCOHost has been greatly appreciated, especially by our faculty, who can access it from their offices.

Drew Proctor attended the CLAMS/ACRL fall conference at Pack Forest in October and brought back some good ideas that may help us in the future.

Everett

We are happy to introduce Steve Fadel who is providing reference and bibliographic instruction at Everett Community College this year on a temporary assignment replacing Jeanie Goodhope, who is on Sabbatical Leave. He graduated from the University of Florida, received his MLS from Florida State in 1994, and worked as a reference librarian for Broward County Libraries in Florida before accepting the position here. He has also lived in Conneticut and Scotland and is currently enjoying exploring the Pacific Northwest.

Lake Washington

Paula Palmer, librarian at Lake Washington Technical College, recently attended the first national Internet Librarian conference held in Monterey, California, November 17-19, 1997. She gave a presentation entitled "Making Your Web Site Accessible" which covered issues to consider when designing and maintaining web sites, and included suggestions and examples for making the "other" door to your library accessible to those with adaptive or technological disabilities. The web site used in conjunction with her session is http://weber.u.washington.edu/~doit/UA/.

Tacoma Community College Library

The good news is, we have a wonderful instructional/reference librarian, Kendall Reid, who has been working for us since last Winter Quarter. The bad news is, due to the College's financial woes he is only temporary and this academic year, part-time. We still hope to permanently fill the position, which was vacated when Janet Grimes retired, but things don't look good for this fiscal year. Nevertheless, the Library is being heavily used, we're teaching more classes each quarter and we feel we're making a positive impact on our students.
